Los Angeles, Nov 26 (NationPress) Actor Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel's “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has criticized the film industry for its insufficient representation of Asian actors in cinema.
The actor expressed his concerns regarding the representation of his community in a social media post.
“Put some Asians in literally anything right now. The amount of backslide in our representation onscreen is... appalling,” Liu stated on Threads. “Studios think we’re risky.”
His comments came after seeing a post advocating for more Asian men to take on romantic lead roles, according to deadline.com.
Liu highlighted successful films such as Minari, The Farewell, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crazy Rich Asians, and his own Marvel movie as proof that Asian-led films can perform well.
“Every single one a financial success,” Liu remarked.
“No Asian actor has ever caused a studio to lose anywhere close to 100 million dollars, yet a white actor can lose 200 million twice and still land the next major role. We’re battling a deeply prejudiced system. Most days...,” he added.
This isn't the first occasion Liu has spoken out about the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood.
Earlier in 2023, he responded to an article suggesting he was receiving “the bulk of Asian male roles.”
Liu commented on the Facebook post, saying, “Way to attempt to put us against one another. What ‘bulk’ of roles are you referring to? Are there films I’m in that I’m unaware of? Do you truly think there’s a quota of ‘Asian male roles’ that's a zero-sum game?”
“Everything I have taken post-Shang-Chi was not written for an Asian. We’ve managed to reshape narratives to enhance representation onscreen. Get your facts straight.”
