Abhishek Manu Singhvi Welcomes Petrol Duty Cut, Urges Comprehensive Discussion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Congress Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Manu Singhvi has responded to the government's decision to reduce excise duty on petrol and diesel, stating that any form of relief should be embraced, as long as it is appropriate and timely.
While speaking with reporters, Singhvi expressed, "I welcome this initiative. Any relief, in any form, should be welcomed if it is appropriate, valid, accurate, and timely."
He did, however, caution against overlooking the larger context behind this decision.
“We mustn't remain in denial. This action was essential due to the reality that we are currently grappling with issues related to petrol. Until now, we were unaware of the repercussions stemming from conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States," he remarked.
Singhvi further highlighted that while the government seems to have acknowledged the necessity to alleviate public distress, more comprehensive actions are warranted.
“For the moment, I appreciate this initiative, but a thorough discussion is required. Without it, this resembles merely applying a band-aid,” he noted.
In agreement, Congress MP Tariq Anwar asserted that this move would not lead to substantial change.
"It won’t yield a major difference; the impact will be minimal. The government is attempting to convey that even in the midst of a crisis concerning petroleum products, it is lowering excise duty. In essence, it is a strategy to enhance its public image," he stated.
Additionally, Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh raised questions regarding the government’s previous stance on fuel pricing.
"Citizens believe that when international crude oil prices decrease, domestic prices should follow suit. Over the past 12 years, during periods of low global crude prices, how much revenue did the government generate? This needs to be made transparent to the public," he urged.
He further criticized the temporary reduction of ₹10, stating it is insufficient. Singh also condemned the government's inadequate response to the situation in West Asia. Referring to statements made by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, he pointed out that warnings regarding a potential energy crisis were overlooked and not addressed in Parliament, leaving the nation ill-equipped.
