Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Jan 26 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) examining the phone tapping allegations has called upon former MP from Telangana and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader, Joginapally Santosh Rao, for interrogation on Tuesday.
Santosh Rao, who served in the Rajya Sabha, is expected to meet with Assistant Commissioner of Police P. Venkatagiri at the ACP's office at 11 a.m.
The summons, issued under section 160 of the Criminal Procedure Code, indicates that the Investigating Officer has learned that he possesses relevant information regarding the case, necessitating his testimony.
This case pertains to the purported interception of phones belonging to various political adversaries, business figures, journalists, and even judges during the prior tenure of the BRS government.
Santosh Rao is related to K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), the BRS president and former Chief Minister, as his nephew.
He is now the third significant leader and a close relative of KCR to be summoned for inquiry by the SIT within a week.
KCR's son and BRS working president, K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), faced more than seven hours of questioning from the SIT on January 23.
Additionally, KCR’s nephew and former minister T. Harish Rao was interrogated by the SIT on January 20.
Previously, the SIT had also interrogated BRS MLC K. Naveen Rao along with former MLAs Jaipal Yadav and C. Lingaiah regarding the same case.
The investigation has also looked into Union Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, BJP MPs Eatala Rajender and M. Raghunandan Rao, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's brother Kondal Reddy as witnesses or victims.
The phone tapping controversy emerged in March 2024, leading to an FIR being filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, and the Information Technology Act at the Panjagutta Police Station in Hyderabad.
A specialized team was allegedly formed in the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) during the BRS administration to surveil the phones of numerous individuals.
Former SIB chief T. Prabhakar Rao is identified as the primary suspect in this case, alongside other accused including Deputy Superintendent of Police D. Praneeth Rao, Additional SPs Thirupathanna and N. Bhujanga Rao, former DCP Radha Kishan Rao, and television channel owner Sravan Kumar.
