New Delhi, Jan 18 (NationPress) A tragic incident claimed the life of a 27-year-old software engineer after his vehicle struck a drainage boundary and fell into a deep ditch in Greater Noida, leading to outrage among local residents due to inadequate road safety measures.
The accident took place near Sector 150 on Friday night while the victim, identified as Yuvraj Mehta, was on his way home from work, according to officials.
Officials noted that the combination of dense fog and the lack of reflectors on the road caused his car to collide with a high-ground ridge that separates two drainage basins.
The car subsequently plunged into a 70-foot-deep ditch filled with water.
Witnesses reported hearing Mehta call for help as his car submerged.
In a heartbreaking phone call to his father, Rajkumar Mehta, he exclaimed, “Dad, I’ve fallen into a deep pit filled with water. I’m drowning. Please come and save me. I don’t want to die.”
Rescue operations commenced promptly, with local police, divers, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams hurrying to the scene.
Rajkumar Mehta was present during the rescue attempts.
After nearly five hours, teams managed to retrieve Mehta and his vehicle from the ditch, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
In the wake of this tragedy, Mehta’s family filed a complaint, claiming that local authorities had failed to install reflectors and cover the drains along the service road.
Rajkumar Mehta pointed out that the absence of safety measures in the midst of dense fog contributed to his son’s untimely demise.
In-charge of Knowledge Park Police Station, Sarvesh Kumar, stated that any negligence discovered during the investigation would be addressed and legal action taken as necessary.
This incident has prompted protests from local residents, who assert that their repeated requests for the installation of reflectors and appropriate signage along the service road have gone unheeded.
Protesters voiced their frustrations against local authorities, demanding immediate measures to avert similar accidents in the future.
