New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) A devastating incident in Noida's Sector-150 resulted in the death of a young software engineer after his vehicle broke through a damaged boundary wall during heavy fog and fell into a water-filled ditch. The victim, identified as Yuvraj Mehta, was the son of Rajkumar Mehta, who has accused the Noida Authority of gross negligence.
As per family accounts, the tragedy occurred near the turn in Sector-150, close to the Knowledge Park area, where Yuvraj reportedly lost control of his car, crashing into an unbarriered, waterlogged construction pit that was approximately 70 feet deep.
In a heart-wrenching recount, Rajkumar Mehta shared that his son contacted him right after the incident, urgently asking for assistance. “Immediately after falling into the pit, Yuvraj called and exclaimed, 'Papa, save me, I have fallen into a drain.' I rushed to help him, but upon arrival, I found no vehicles around. Fortunately, I managed to find a cab and asked the driver to take me to the site. When I got there, he was not visible. I called him again and learned that he had fallen near a pit in our society. I sought police assistance, and soon the NDRF team arrived,” he explained.
“Clearly, this incident occurred due to the negligence of the Noida Authority, who failed to implement adequate safety measures to prevent such tragedies,” he added.
Rajkumar Mehta further claimed that his son fought for survival for nearly two hours. Yuvraj reportedly managed to climb onto the roof of his partially submerged vehicle and utilized his mobile phone’s flashlight to signal for help in the thick fog, repeatedly calling out for assistance. Unfortunately, the absence of proper rescue equipment delayed the efforts to save him.
Emergency responders from the Knowledge Park police station, fire brigade teams, SDRF, and later the NDRF, were involved in the rescue operations, which lasted nearly four-and-a-half hours. In the early moments of the rescue, Yuvraj was seen intermittently standing atop the car, activating his mobile torch and calling for help.
However, the rescue was hindered by darkness, dense fog, and minimal visibility. Police and fire personnel refrained from entering the water due to freezing temperatures and the dangers posed by the construction columns beneath the surface.
In a desperate bid to save Yuvraj, a Flipkart delivery agent named Moninder tied a rope around himself and leaped into the ditch, but the depth of the pit and poor visibility thwarted the rescue efforts.
Moninder stated that numerous individuals tried to locate Yuvraj in the water but were unsuccessful. “I searched in the water for 30–40 minutes but could not find him. By the time I arrived, he had already drowned. I was too late. More than 100 people had come before me…” he lamented.
Yuvraj Mehta, originally from Sitamarhi district in Bihar, worked as a software engineer at Dunnhumby in Gurugram. Tragically, his mother passed away two years prior, and his sister currently resides in the United Kingdom.
Family and residents alleged that the site of the accident lacked appropriate barricading, warning signs, and sufficient lighting, raising significant safety concerns.
As calls for accountability and improved infrastructure safety mount following this fatal event, authorities have yet to respond comprehensively.
