Bengaluru, May 3 (NationPress) The Karnataka Police have filed an FIR against the well-known singer Sonu Nigam in response to a controversy surrounding his comments that connected a request for a Kannada song with the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred on April 22. Outraged by his remarks, several Kannada organizations demanded an immediate apology, leading to a formal complaint being lodged with the authorities.
The Avalahalli Police in Bengaluru have registered the FIR under various sections of the BNS Act, including Sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (inciting public mischief), and 352(1) (intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace).
This legal action was initiated following a complaint from Dharmaraj A., the President of the Bengaluru City District Unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.
On May 1, during a performance at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Bengaluru, Sonu Nigam halted his singing when a member of the audience asked for a Kannada song.
In a controversial statement, he remarked, “I have sung in various languages, but Kannada songs are among the best. I always come to Karnataka with love and respect, and I have always felt like family here.
“I have sung Kannada songs upon request for many years, but I was uncomfortable with the way he yelled ‘Kannada, Kannada.’ Such behavior can lead to incidents like the Pahalgam attack.”
The subsequent backlash was swift, with Kannada organizations expressing outrage over his comments and questioning the linkage he made between a song request and a terrorist incident. Some groups have even called for a ban on Sonu Nigam's performances.
The complaint alleges that Sonu Nigam's remarks were insulting to Kannadigas and incited animosity among different linguistic communities.
According to the complaint, Nigam's statements were made during a musical event held on April 25-26 and were deemed objectionable and emotionally charged.
“His comments have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Kannadiga community, incited hatred among various linguistic groups, and could potentially lead to violence. A video of his statement has gone viral, igniting widespread outrage among millions of Kannadigas,” the complaint stated.
“Sonu Nigam's remarks are divisive and detrimental to communal harmony, violating several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023: BNS Section 352 (1), Section 351 (2), and Section 353.
By mocking a request for a Kannada song and relating it to a terrorist act, his statements have offended the linguistic sentiments of the Kannadiga community, which holds its language and culture in high regard. This behavior threatens public harmony and undermines the dignity of Kannadigas,” the complaint noted.
“Sonu Nigam's words have caused significant distress within the Kannadiga community. By equating a simple request for a Kannada song with a terrorist act, he has misrepresented Kannadigas as intolerant, which contradicts their peaceful and harmonious nature.
“Such statements from a prominent figure like Sonu Nigam, who has a large following, can create a negative perception of Kannadigas and encourage division among communities, thus jeopardizing communal harmony,” the complaint further asserted.
