Guwahati, Oct 27 (NationPress) A significant political uproar has emerged in Assam following remarks made by Karnataka Rural Development Minister and Congress member Priyank Kharge, who questioned the abilities and potential of Assam's youth regarding India’s expanding semiconductor industry. Kharge's statements have incited considerable backlash throughout the state, receiving vehement disapproval from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Chief Minister fiercely criticized Kharge, labeling the comment as “an affront to the dignity and labor of Assam’s youth.”
“Priyank Kharge has revealed himself as a first-class fool. His remark demonstrates a profoundly biased attitude that disparages the youth of Assam. By doubting their education and capabilities, he has insulted every young professional in our state. The Congress has failed to denounce his remarks, clearly indicating their perspective on the Northeast. We are considering legal measures against him for his divisive and offensive statement,” CM Sarma shared with reporters.
The Assam BJP also retaliated sharply via a critical social media post, mocking Kharge for his “arrogant outburst.”
“If ‘talent’ means flattering the boss and taking biscuits intended for Rahul Gandhi’s pet, then thankfully, the people of Assam are devoid of talent. Mr. Junior Kharge, aside from being Senior Kharge’s offspring, do you possess any real skills? This father-son duo has made a habit of belittling Assam,” the party remarked.
Accusing the local Congress unit of remaining silent, the BJP added, “Once again, their local team, including their Paaijaan, will seal their lips with Fevicol.”
Significantly, while addressing the media regarding the Union government’s semiconductor investment initiatives, Kharge expressed dissatisfaction over projects being allocated to Gujarat and Assam instead of Karnataka.
“Why are semiconductor industries being established in Gujarat and Assam when they should be in Bengaluru? The investments intended for Karnataka are being redirected. What is present in these two states? Is there any talent in Assam and Gujarat?” he allegedly stated.
The comments -- perceived by many as condescending and elitist -- have faced widespread condemnation across Assam’s political landscape and civil society, with numerous organizations demanding a public apology from the Congress leader for what they have labeled an “insult to the people of the Northeast.”
The controversy continues to escalate, with student unions, civil society organizations, and professionals denouncing Kharge’s remarks as “elitist” and “regionally biased,” insisting on an unconditional apology to the people of Assam.
