Congress Responds Strongly to Assam CM's 'Offensive' Comments
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) The Congress party has launched a vehement response against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, condemning his remarks towards its leadership as "offensive and uncivilized". The party also criticized the police actions against spokesperson Pawan Khera.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari expressed his disapproval, stating, "The Chief Minister's language directed at our National President Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders like Rahul Gandhi is unacceptable and unbecoming of a Chief Minister."
Tiwari further condemned the police intervention concerning Khera, describing it as an "insult" and reiterating that Khera's statements were based on documented facts.
This controversy arose from Sarma's comments made a day prior during a press briefing in Jorhat, where he sharply criticized Kharge, questioning the integrity of Congress statements.
Sarma remarked, "Kharge is aging and speaks like a 'pagal' (madman). You first insult the people and then seek verification from the External Affairs Minister?" This drew fierce backlash from the opposition.
He continued to challenge the Congress leadership, asking, "Who is Kharge?" and referenced allegations by Khera regarding Sarma’s family.
Issuing a warning, Sarma stated, "Assam Police will locate Khera from paatal (hell)," hinting at potential legal repercussions for Khera's claims about his wife's multiple passports.
Moreover, Sarma suggested the issue could extend to Rahul Gandhi, insinuating that the documents referenced by Khera might have been provided by him. "I suspect Rahul Gandhi has supplied him with these documents. This case could very well involve Rahul Gandhi. Don't attempt to intimidate us. This is Assam, and we have resisted Islamic invasion 17 times," Sarma asserted.
The exchange has heightened the political tensions between the BJP and the Congress, especially with the Assembly elections approaching on April 9.
The Congress has deemed Sarma's remarks as "derogatory" and "unacceptable," further escalating the already charged political atmosphere.
