Key Takeaways
Guwahati, April 7 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated on Tuesday that the accusations made by Congress leader Pawan Khera regarding his wife's purported foreign passports have been thoroughly debunked.
Addressing the media, CM Sarma emphasized that the governments of the three nations implicated in the allegations have categorically denied that his wife possesses their passports. He declared, “The Congress's falsehoods are now fully unmasked. All three nations have dismissed Pawan Khera's assertions.”
Furthermore, the Chief Minister claimed that Assam Police had visited Khera’s home as part of their inquiry but alleged that the Congress leader was not present. “The Assam Police went to Pawan Khera’s residence, but he was nowhere to be found,” asserted CM Sarma.
He also suggested that Khera might have escaped to Hyderabad to avoid interrogation, stating “He has likely fled to Hyderabad.”
CM Sarma contended that the accusations were politically driven, aimed at tarnishing his reputation and that of his family in the lead-up to the elections. He affirmed that the state government would take legal action against those propagating misinformation.
The dispute arose after Khera accused Sarma's wife of holding multiple foreign passports, a claim vehemently denied by the Chief Minister and his family.
On Tuesday, the Assam Police visited the residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera in Delhi amidst the controversy regarding the party's assertion that Chief Minister Sarma's wife possesses three passports. This investigation followed an FIR lodged by Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, on Monday.
Earlier, during a press briefing in Guwahati, CM Sarma vowed to take “the strictest action” against Pawan Khera concerning the matter.
He firmly refuted allegations suggesting his family had property holdings in Dubai, labeling the claims as “completely fabricated” and part of what he described as a misinformation campaign orchestrated by Congress.
In a statement on social media platform X, Sarma claimed that documents circulating online, which allegedly display Dubai property title deeds associated with his family, were counterfeit and filled with discrepancies.
“Another lie of #CongFakeAICampaign debunked. The Dubai property title deeds are also FAKE, exhibiting glaring inconsistencies and lacking any authentic records,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister further asserted that there is no official documentation supporting the allegations and encouraged the public to independently verify the facts through Dubai's official land records portal.
He concluded that all claims surrounding this issue have been “completely disproven”.
Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and Pawan Khera, have recently raised concerns regarding the alleged foreign assets and connections of the Chief Minister's family, including claims about properties in Dubai and foreign documents.
These allegations have been firmly denied by the Chief Minister and his family. Sarma's wife, Riniki, has also refuted claims of any foreign business interests or assets, describing the accusations as “baseless”.
