Bengaluru, April 8 (NationPress) In a strong rebuke, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President, D.K. Shivakumar, has called for an apology from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his remarks regarding AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Shivakumar labeled Sarma's comments as disrespectful and entirely unacceptable.
In his statement, Shivakumar emphasized that Kharge is a seasoned politician who has devoted decades to public service, currently serving as the President of the Indian National Congress.
He underscored the historical significance of the Congress President's role, pointing out that it was once held by Mahatma Gandhi. “Such derogatory language aimed at a leader of Kharge's caliber is simply intolerable and diminishes the dignity of political dialogue in our nation,” Shivakumar asserted.
Shivakumar demanded accountability from Sarma, insisting that he should promptly deliver an unconditional apology for his remarks.
This statement arises amid increasing political discord, with reactions from leaders of various parties intensifying.
Sarma's controversial comments were made while speaking to reporters in Assam's Jorhat. He harshly criticized Kharge, questioning his statements and employing inflammatory language.
“Kharge is becoming senile and is speaking like a 'pagal' (madman). You first insult the public and then claim you will consult the External Affairs Minister for verification?” Sarma remarked.
He further questioned, “Who is Kharge?” and scrutinized the Congress leadership regarding recent allegations involving party spokesperson Pawan Khera.
Sarma also threatened that “Assam Police will find Khera from paatal (hell)” concerning allegations about his wife's possession of three passports, hinting at potential legal consequences.
Moreover, Sarma suggested that the issue might extend to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that Khera may have received documents from him.
“I suspect Rahul Gandhi has bestowed these documents upon him. Therefore, this case might also implicate Rahul Gandhi. Do not attempt to intimidate us; this is Assam, where we have resisted Islamic invasions 17 times,” CM Sarma stated.
Notably, during an election rally in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Monday, Kharge referenced the Quran, stating that if a venomous snake crosses someone's path, even during namaz, they should abandon their prayers to eliminate the threat. “In my view, discontinuing namaz is inconsequential. The RSS and the BJP represent that venomous snake,” Kharge declared.
