Bengaluru, May 15 (NationPress) The Karnataka High Court has provided a significant relief to singer Sonu Nigam by instructing law enforcement not to pursue any coercive measures against him in a case surrounding his controversial statements.
The matter revolves around Nigam's purported comments that connected a request for a Kannada song during an event in Bengaluru to the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam.
A bench led by Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar has also urged Nigam to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Conversely, the prosecution's attorney argued against granting relief to Nigam, stating that the incident was broadcast live and received extensive media attention, thus necessitating legal repercussions.
An FIR was filed on May 3 citing Sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (statements inciting public mischief), and 352(1) (intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace or inciting further offenses) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
This FIR stemmed from a complaint made by Dharmaraj A., who serves as the president of the Bengaluru City District unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.
In his appeal to the Karnataka High Court, Nigam sought the annulment of the FIR filed against him by the Karnataka Police.
During the event held at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Bengaluru, a young audience member interrupted Nigam by requesting a Kannada song.
In response to the interruption, Nigam remarked, "I have performed in numerous languages. Among them, the finest songs are in Kannada. When I visit Karnataka, I do so with immense love and respect. You have always treated me like family. I regularly sing Kannada songs when asked. I have been performing in Kannada longer than the age of that particular youth. However, I was displeased with the way he shouted 'Kannada, Kannada.' It is due to such conduct that events like the Pahalgam attack occur."
His comments ignited widespread anger, prompting multiple Kannada organizations to demand a public apology.
Following this, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) prohibited him from participating in any professional endeavors within the Kannada film sector and called for an apology.
In reaction, Sonu Nigam expressed his remorse on Instagram, stating: "Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is greater than my ego. Love you always."
