Johannesburg, June 23 (NationPress) - South Africa has voiced its alarm regarding the recent assaults by the United States on Iranian installations, advocating for dialogue to resolve the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government have expressed significant concern over the involvement of the United States in the Israel-Iran hostilities.
This statement follows US President Donald Trump's announcement on Saturday, declaring that American forces had executed strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
The US strikes were a response to Israeli military operations that began on June 13, targeting various locations in Iran, including nuclear and military sites, which resulted in the deaths of senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. In retaliation, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against Israel.
As of Saturday, the Iranian Health Ministry reported that over 400 individuals have lost their lives, and more than 3,500 have been injured in Iran. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities confirmed 24 deaths.
In their statement, South Africa expressed a genuine desire for all parties to engage in dialogue to resolve their disputes, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
South Africa urged the United States, Israel, and Iran to allow the United Nations to take the lead in peacefully addressing disputes, including the inspection and verification of Iran's uranium enrichment status and its broader nuclear capabilities.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) disclosed that its Air Force executed targeted strikes on crucial command centers and assets associated with Iran's internal security forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Tehran, guided by specific intelligence from the IDF Intelligence Directorate.
According to the IDF, more than 50 fighter jets were involved in attacking military targets in Tehran during the latest assault, which is part of a broader strategy to undermine the military capabilities of the Iranian regime. The Air Force targeted military headquarters, missile and radar production sites, and missile storage facilities in the Tehran region.
The IDF reported that it has struck several military headquarters of the Iranian regime, including the Tharallah headquarters, which serves to protect Tehran from security threats, including internal risks. Additionally, the Sayed Al-Shahada Brigade, also under the Revolutionary Guards, was targeted as it is responsible for homeland defense.
