Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 27 (NationPress) As the Parliament session approaches, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called upon the state's MPs to transcend political divisions and unite in advocating for issues vital to Kerala's welfare. During a virtual meeting that included MPs from both Houses, Vijayan emphasized the importance of a collective effort to obtain Kerala's rightful share from the Centre, particularly in financial regulation, environmental clearances, infrastructure financing, and ongoing development initiatives.
He warned that divisive politics should not jeopardize Kerala's standing in Parliament, especially regarding crucial matters like central fund distribution, GST compensation, and support for essential welfare programs.
Vijayan highlighted several urgent issues that require the attention of Kerala's parliamentarians, such as the Centre's limitations on the state's borrowing capabilities, delays in central funding for national highway projects, the sluggish pace of railway development—especially the Sabari rail line—and challenges affecting the distribution of social welfare pensions.
He urged MPs to firmly oppose any policy actions that could “diminish the spirit of federalism and the autonomy of states.”
The Chief Minister also reiterated the necessity of advocating for Kerala's longstanding request for federal aid to reconstruct infrastructure damaged by floods and to obtain timely approvals for environmental and coastal protection projects that are critical for climate resilience.
Vijayan described Parliament as a crucial arena for voicing Kerala's developmental objectives, calling for a collaborative strategy that transcends party lines.
The meeting also touched on the need to counter “misleading narratives” pertaining to Kerala’s financial status and to showcase the state’s accomplishments in healthcare, education, and social justice.
Numerous MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participated in the virtual discussion.
Kerala is represented by 20 Lok Sabha MPs, including the sole BJP member, Union Minister of State for Tourism Suresh Gopi, along with 10 Rajya Sabha members, which includes a nominated member and senior BJP leader C. Sadanandan.
Vijayan is anticipated to convene a follow-up strategy session once the Parliament session gets underway.
