What Are South Korea and the US Discussing Regarding Joint Visa Cooperation?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 29 (NationPress) Senior diplomats from South Korea and the United States engaged in discussions on Thursday aimed at executing their joint summit agreements and enhancing collaboration regarding US visa issues affecting South Korean laborers, as reported by the South Korean foreign ministry.
The dialogue featured Park Jong-han, the Deputy Foreign Minister for economic affairs, and Jonathan Fritz, the US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, according to a release from the ministry, as cited by Yonhap News Agency.
Fritz's visit to Seoul this week was part of follow-up discussions concerning US visa reform designed to facilitate the entry of Korean workers into the US. This initiative stems from the establishment of a working group after over 300 Korean workers were arrested and detained during a US immigration operation in Georgia last year.
The meeting on Thursday was also crucial for Seoul, as it aims to reassure Washington of its commitment to a USD 350 billion investment in the US, following warnings from US President Donald Trump about potential tariff increases for South Korea, citing insufficient legislative progress at the National Assembly.
“Deputy Minister Park reiterated the government's determination to diligently implement the follow-up measures from the South Korea-US summits, advocating for sustained close communication between their diplomatic entities,” the ministry stated.
Park also sought ongoing support from Washington to ensure seamless business operations for Korean firms investing in the United States, it added.
During the visa working group discussions on Wednesday, the US announced the introduction of a new criterion for “specialized trainers” concerning short-term B-1 business visa applications, a change anticipated to clarify visa eligibility.
South Korean companies have expressed that ambiguous US visa regulations have resulted in confusion among employees traveling to the US for business.
The discussions also encompassed measures to guarantee that Korean investors can execute their US investments smoothly, particularly in sectors such as shipbuilding and other strategic industries.
