Seoul, Jan 12 (NationPress) The government of South Korea is committed to pursuing initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and fostering trust with North Korea, despite recent accusations from Pyongyang concerning alleged drone incursions into its territory, as stated by the unification ministry on Monday.

Yoon Min-ho, spokesperson for the unification ministry, expressed these sentiments following President Lee Jae Myung's directive last week to establish a joint military-police investigation team tasked with examining the purported drone incursions.

On Sunday, Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, called for a comprehensive explanation from Seoul, a day after North Korea's military alleged that South Korea breached its sovereignty by deploying drones equipped with surveillance technology in September and on January 4.

"It is crucial to persist in efforts to reduce tensions and cultivate trust between the North and South through the prompt fact-finding actions of the investigation team," the spokesperson remarked during a press briefing.

Yoon also reiterated Seoul's position of having no intention to provoke or upset North Korea, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The South Korean military has denied the allegations regarding drone operations on the dates cited by North Korea, suggesting that the drones may have been operated by private individuals.

North Korea claimed on Saturday that South Korea had violated its sovereignty with drone incursions in September of the previous year and earlier this week, warning that Seoul should prepare to "face severe consequences" for what it labeled a provocation.

In response, South Korea's defense ministry rejected Pyongyang's assertions, clarifying that the military had not operated drones on the dates specified by the North.

A spokesperson from the General Staff of the Korean People's Army condemned South Korea as "the most hostile" adversary, asserting that Seoul continues to engage in provocative actions, contradicting its attempts at dialogue with Pyongyang, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

"The Republic of Korea (ROK) must brace itself to incur a hefty price for yet another provocation infringing upon the sovereignty of the DPRK with a drone," the spokesperson stated, referring to South Korea by its official designation, while DPRK stands for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
