Seoul, Jan 20 (NationPress) President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea has called upon officials to initiate a comprehensive investigation into a civilian suspected of operating a drone that allegedly crossed into North Korea. He labeled this act as unacceptable and insisted on stringent actions.
Lee made these comments during a Cabinet meeting, following the questioning of the civilian by a coordinated military-police task force last Friday regarding the purported drone breach.
"Sending drones to the North for illegal activities, or allowing a civilian to infiltrate drones into North Korean airspace, is intolerable," he asserted.
Earlier this month, North Korea accused South Korea of violating its sovereignty with drone incursions occurring in September of the previous year and again on January 4.
The influential sister of Kim Jong-un demanded that Seoul acknowledge and apologize for the incident.
Contrarily, South Korea's military has refuted these claims, stating that the drones involved were not operated by military personnel, according to reports from the Yonhap news agency.
Lee expressed disbelief that a civilian could have single-handedly dispatched the drone for intelligence gathering, hinting at possible involvement from state institutions.
"Based on the information available, a civilian's reckless action of sending a drone into North Korea is akin to instigating war," he remarked, equating the incident to 'firing a gun' at the North.
"We must thoroughly investigate this situation and implement strict measures to prevent any recurrence," he emphasized.
He subsequently criticized Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back for the failure to detect the drone's movements.
"How could you not notice the drones operating back and forth with the advancements in technology and defense capabilities?" he questioned.
"This indicates a flaw in our surveillance system," he added.
Furthermore, he instructed authorities to minimize unnecessary escalation of tensions with the North, cautioning that further confrontations could negatively impact the economy and strain inter-Korean relations.
