Seoul, Sep 9 (NationPress) The head of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) asserted on Tuesday that the current special counsel investigation into former President Yoon Suk Yeol's unsuccessful martial law attempt should not be interpreted as political retribution. He emphasized the necessity for strict consequences for those accountable.
Rep. Jung Chung-rae made this statement during his inaugural policy address at the first regular National Assembly session since President Lee Jae Myung assumed office in June, as Yoon is presently undergoing trial for allegedly initiating an insurrection through his martial law attempt in December.
"Addressing the insurrection issue is not a matter of political retribution. It is crucial for both the ruling and opposition parties, as well as conservatives and progressives, to confront this enduring task of reconciling history," stated Jung.
"A comprehensive investigation into the insurrection's truth and the punishment of those involved must be prioritized," he added.
Jung further called for the urgent approval of three legislative revisions to prolong special counsel investigations concerning Yoon's martial law allegations, issues relating to his spouse, Kim Keon Hee, and a military inquiry into the death of a young Marine in 2023.
He insisted that the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), the conservative group Yoon left following his impeachment, should publicly apologize and dissociate from pro-martial law factions, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
If the PPP does not distance itself from those implicated in the insurrection accusations, Jung cautioned that the party could face a constitutional trial that might result in its designation as an unconstitutional entity.
The DP has criticized the PPP for protecting Yoon, highlighting that the majority of its legislators abstained from voting to terminate his martial law declaration on December 3 and later opposed his impeachment.
Jung also committed to advocating for reforms in the prosecution, judiciary, and media through pertinent legislation, while supporting the Lee administration's economic initiatives aimed at stimulating growth.
The DP has promoted bills aimed at dismantling the prosecution's central headquarters and establishing new agencies assigned with investigative and indictment responsibilities.
