Chennai, Oct 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK President, M.K. Stalin, emphasized on Monday that his relationship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is founded on the principle that the nation’s interests should always take precedence over individual agendas.
Speaking at the family wedding of the late Congress MLA R. Chokkar, Stalin characterized his connection with Rahul Gandhi as one forged through mutual respect and a common ideology. He affirmed that the alliance between DMK and Congress is crucial for preserving India's democratic and secular identity.
“Our collaboration is guided by shared values and a vision for India’s unity and the advancement of Tamil Nadu. I firmly believe this partnership will safeguard the future of our nation,” he stated.
Stalin's comments come at a politically pivotal moment, reinforcing the DMK-Congress alliance ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, amidst discussions within Congress about seeking additional seats and influence within the partnership.
Reflecting on his personal bond with Gandhi, Stalin noted, “Rahul Gandhi is the only political figure I refer to as my brother. I do not use that term for anyone else. He affectionately calls me his elder brother during our phone calls, a sentiment I cherish. Our friendship has evolved into a robust political alliance that represents India.”
The DMK leader also reminisced about the amicable relationship between the late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Congress stalwart Chokkar, recalling his witnessing of Chokkar’s dedicated advocacy for his constituency in the Assembly.
“Their camaraderie showcased mutual respect that transcended party lines, which is essential for contemporary politics,” Stalin remarked.
He commended Chokkar’s son, Sree Raja Chokkar, who currently leads the Virudhunagar District Congress Committee, for upholding his father's legacy of public service and dedication.
Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s progressive social reforms, Stalin mentioned that the newlywed couple hailed from different communities. “It was under C.N. Annadurai's leadership that the DMK government revised the Hindu Marriage Act in 1967 to legalize self-respect marriages. Today's wedding exemplifies that inclusive vision,” he stated.
The gathering, attended by numerous DMK and Congress leaders, emphasized the strengthening bonds between the allies as they prepare for the 2026 Assembly elections.
