Will Indian-origin Sujit Singh Secure the Democratic Nomination in New Jersey’s 12th?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 8 (NationPress) Sujit Singh, a technology specialist and community advocate who experienced a close defeat in last year's mayoral election, is now pursuing the Democratic nomination for New Jersey's 12th Congressional District. His campaign is focused on human services, inclusion, and grassroots politics.
“For several years, I have engaged in nonprofit human services, and I feel this sector is underrepresented in our township, county, and throughout New Jersey,” Singh shared in an interview with IANS, shedding light on his motivation to run for Congress.
Singh highlighted that the four-county district is both diverse and underserved in critical policy areas. “There is a significant need to enhance human services,” he stated, adding that he aims to advocate for low-income families, immigrant populations, seniors, and youth to guarantee “opportunities for everyone.”
His personal story plays a vital role in his campaign narrative. Singh shared that he hails from Jhajjar in Haryana, near New Delhi, where he grew up in a farming family and worked in agriculture while pursuing his education.
“I come from a lineage of farmers,” he reminisced, recalling his formative years spent working on the farm during middle school, high school, and breaks.
After obtaining an engineering degree, Singh moved to the United States in 1998 for employment, arriving with limited funds. “I landed with merely $90,” he recounted, describing America as “a nation built by immigrants, truly diligent and skilled.”
He noted that his employer provided support from day one, enabling him to establish his career and life in New Jersey, where he eventually raised a family in West Windsor, considering it his home.
Over the past three decades, Singh has developed a career in technology consulting and public-sector initiatives, focusing on large-scale programs that provide direct benefits to families and children.
“I chose this line of work because it aligns with my values,” he remarked, emphasizing that his professional journey has influenced his perspective on public policy and governance.
Singh's electoral experience includes a mayoral bid in West Windsor last year, where he narrowly missed victory by just 164 votes.
“I ran for mayor last year and came exceedingly close to winning,” Singh stated, describing the campaign as a potent grassroots movement.
This previous campaign has defined his strategy for the congressional race. “My fundamental campaign approach is grassroots,” he affirmed, recalling that he knocked on over 8,000 doors in just over two months during his mayoral run. “Connecting with people at their doorstep and listening to them” remains a central part of his strategy.
Singh underscored the demographic richness of New Jersey's 12th District, pointing out significant Asian, Hispanic, and Black communities, along with a sizable immigrant and small business population. “It’s a truly diverse and proud district that is thriving,” he commented.
He argued that despite this diversity, concerns surrounding human services and disability support have not received adequate attention. Singh pointed to his extensive nonprofit experience aiding adults with disabilities, which has provided him insights into how federal policies impact daily lives.
He stated that he has collaborated closely with caregivers, social workers, and local leaders to elevate quality of life and broaden services.
On the campaign trail, Singh has witnessed increasing support across communities. “I am gaining backing from every town and neighborhood,” he shared, noting that over 200 supporters have already pledged to assist his campaign.
He emphasized that this support transcends Indian Americans to include South Asian, Hispanic, and other communities.
Singh also addressed foreign policy, underscoring the role of Congress in shaping U.S. alliances and national security. He described New Delhi as a crucial strategic partner and committed to strengthening India-U.S. relations.
New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District has been a Democratic stronghold for decades and is regarded as a politically significant seat.
