Amaravati, June 13 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and President of the YSR Congress Party, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, expressed on Friday that the Supreme Court's order for the immediate release of senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao serves as a significant blow to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
He accused Chandrababu Naidu of operating in a manner that is both authoritarian and undemocratic.
“The court rightly pointed out that the arrest constituted a major violation of fundamental rights and freedom of expression,” the YSRCP leader stated on X in response to the Supreme Court granting bail to Srinivasa Rao, who faced allegations regarding derogatory remarks about women in Amaravati during a debate aired on the Telugu news channel ‘Sakshi.
Srinivasa Rao, an anchor at the channel owned by Jagan Mohan Reddy’s family, was moderating a discussion when one of the panelists made inappropriate comments.
“As public scrutiny mounts around significant corruption linked to Amaravati, ineffective governance, and worsening law and order, Chandrababu attempted to fabricate a controversy with his so-called yellow gang to distract the public. By wrongly attributing statements to Kommineni garu and launching a campaign filled with misinformation and violence, including orchestrated attacks on Sakshi media offices, Chandrababu has undermined media freedom and democracy,” said the former chief minister.
“Even after the Supreme Court's intervention, he continued to cast blame on YSRCP and Sakshi, revealing his political agenda. The court's ruling dismantled this conspiracy, reminding the nation that truth will ultimately triumph,” added Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The Supreme Court granted bail to Srinivasa Rao and ordered his release on Friday. In questioning the Andhra Pradesh government regarding the arrest, the Supreme Court emphasized the need to protect Rao's journalistic rights and his fundamental right to freedom of speech.
The 70-year-old journalist was apprehended by state police at his home in Hyderabad on June 9 and was taken to Guntur district, where a court placed him in judicial custody for 14 days.
On June 11, police also arrested journalist and political analyst VV Krishnam Raju, who allegedly made derogatory remarks about women from the Amaravati region. A Guntur court has ordered his judicial custody until June 26.
