IPL 2026: Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on MI's Batting Deficiency in Loss to DC
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged that his team fell short by 15-20 runs in their batting performance, contributing to their six-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.
On a pitch that was challenging for shot-making, Suryakumar emerged as the top scorer with 51 runs as MI managed a total of 162/6. However, DC successfully chased the target as the conditions improved for batting under lights, with Sameer Rizvi delivering an impressive performance by scoring 90 runs.
“It was a fair wicket. We anticipated it would play a bit slower, but from a batting perspective, we were indeed short by 15-20 runs. That said, I must commend their bowlers and their batting display in the second innings,” Suryakumar remarked after the match.
Commenting on Rizvi’s second consecutive fifty in the tournament, Suryakumar stated, “Absolutely. Coming in at 7 for 2, his innings was crucial and he played fabulously. He kept us out of contention.”
Suryakumar noted that the pitch conditions were largely consistent throughout both innings, crediting the opposition for their superior understanding of the conditions. “The pitch didn’t change significantly, but they executed their batting beautifully and adapted well in the second innings,” he added.
MI had set a target of 180-185 as a good score but fell short. “We believed 180-185 was a competitive score. We were 15-20 runs short. Both Naman and I got out at crucial moments during the 16th and 18th overs, which impacted our chances of posting a par score,” he explained.
Despite the loss, Suryakumar remained upbeat as MI prepares to face the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Tuesday. “There will be days like this when you put in effort and it doesn’t pan out. We will regroup, work hard, and aim for improvement in the next match,” he concluded.
