The interim budget's welfare payments may mislead voters.
Implementation of announcements awaits the new Cabinet post-elections.
Concerns regarding the model code of conduct impacting budget allocations.
Political maneuvering evident as elections approach.

Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, raised concerns on Friday regarding the feasibility of the state government's promise to increase payments under various welfare schemes in the interim budget (vote on account) proposed by Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya the previous day.

He emphasized that the state government lacks the authority to declare enhancements in welfare payments within an interim budget or to ascertain the number of beneficiaries for those schemes.

“Consequently, the state government cannot allocate any budget for these schemes. Furthermore, the increased payments mentioned in the interim budget are set to take effect on April 1 of this year. However, by that time, the model code of conduct will be applicable, as the polling dates for the Assembly elections will be announced. Therefore, the state government has effectively misled the populace with such declarations in the interim budget,” the Leader of the Opposition stated to reporters on Friday evening.

He also highlighted that the current state Cabinet lacks the power to actualize these announcements.

“Only the new Cabinet that will be formed post-elections, following the presentation of the full budget in the Assembly, can implement these changes. The state government has essentially utilized the interim budget as a campaign manifesto for the Trinamool Congress,” he remarked.

He argued that such misleading announcements indicate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's apprehension of losing the upcoming Assembly elections.

“Motivated by this fear of defeat, she has opposed a special intensive revision in West Bengal. Now, in a state of desperation, she resorts to making these misleading declarations in the interim budget,” he added.

He further accused the Chief Minister of consistently misleading the public.

“In the past, she made similar claims regarding the NRC and CAA being identical. She also did this concerning the implementation of the Waqf (Amendment) Act,” he concluded.

Point of View

Suvendu Adhikari's comments reflect the ongoing tension in West Bengal politics. The allegations of misleading announcements resonate in a pre-election context. As the state prepares for elections, transparency and accountability become crucial for maintaining public trust. A careful examination of political strategies is essential as they impact the electorate's perception significantly.
