New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) Prominent attorney and former governor of Mizoram, Swaraj Kaushal, who was the spouse of the late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and father to BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, sadly passed away on Thursday at the age of 73.
In a heartfelt message on social media, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj honored her father, stating, “Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your love, discipline, simplicity, patriotism, and endless patience illuminate my life and will never fade.”
“Your loss has brought me profound sorrow, yet I find solace in the belief that you have reunited with Mother, embraced by God, and now reside in eternal peace,” she expressed.
“Being your daughter fills me with immense pride, and your legacy, values, and blessings will serve as the cornerstone of my future endeavors,” she added.
A multitude of leaders from various political backgrounds paid their respects to Kaushal, who was cremated at the Lodhi Road cremation ground on Thursday evening.
Born on July 12, 1952, in Solan, Kaushal was an esteemed criminal lawyer with educational roots in Delhi and Chandigarh. He held the position of Mizoram Governor from 1990 to 1993.
He was also a member of Parliament from 1998 to 2004 representing the Haryana Vikas Party and served in the Rajya Sabha during the terms 1998-99 and 2000-2004.
Kaushal married Sushma Swaraj in 1975, and their daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, is currently a BJP Lok Sabha member from New Delhi. Sushma Swaraj passed away due to a cardiac arrest on August 6, 2019.
Throughout his career, Kaushal gained recognition as an authority on the northeast region and its insurgency issues.
He is particularly remembered for his instrumental role in the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which concluded 20 years of insurgency. He was appointed as the first Advocate General of Mizoram in 1987.
In his early legal career, Kaushal gained prominence by representing socialist leader George Fernandes during the Baroda dynamite case trial amid the Emergency period of 1975-77.
