Bengaluru, May 26 (NationPress) The Congress-led government in Karnataka announced on Monday that the choice to designate actress Tamannaah Bhatia as the brand ambassador for the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) was made solely based on business considerations.
The Karnataka government, led by Siddaramaiah, has appointed Tamannaah Bhatia as the brand ambassador for the renowned Mysore Sandal Soap produced by KSDL.
The actress has received a fee of Rs 6.20 crore for this role.
This decision has sparked controversy, with various Kannada organizations and the BJP expressing their discontent.
In response, M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries, remarked on Monday, “While the BJP leaders are vocal now, where were they when significant scams occurred under Madal Virupakshappa during the BJP's rule?”
Patil further questioned the same leaders, who now claim to defend Karnataka’s entrepreneurial spirit, about their silence when Virupakshappa was jailed for corruption linked to KSDL. “Did BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra play a part in those irregularities?” he challenged.
He affirmed that the decision to appoint Tamannaah was strictly based on business rationale.
“An expert committee evaluated multiple factors before arriving at this decision. Other celebrities were considered, but they were engaged with competing brands and thus could not be chosen,” he explained.
Patil took a jab at Vijayendra and other BJP leaders regarding their recent remarks about protecting KSDL's legacy, questioning their inaction when the company faced issues during the BJP's governance.
Since the Congress government took charge, steps have been taken to improve KSDL's operations.
“Utilizing the same equipment and workforce, we have increased production capacity, and the company is now profitable. The BJP leaders, who were indifferent to KSDL's losses, are now making bold claims about safeguarding the state's interests,” Patil criticized.
He noted that leaders from certain organizations who initially opposed Tamannaah's appointment later reached out to express their approval of the strategies being implemented to expand KSDL’s reach, acknowledging they were not fully informed at first.
Moreover, he disclosed that KSDL has launched 23 new products, with upcoming plans for dishwashing items and perfumes.
Patil added that similar reforms are being rolled out at Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL).
“The Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, will soon unveil initiatives aimed at digitizing MSIL to boost its annual transactions to Rs 10,000 crore by 2030. Additionally, MSIL’s stationery division has been revived, including the reintroduction of ‘Lekhak’ notebooks,” he concluded.
