Will Tamil Nadu BJP Secure an Increase in Pongal Cash Gift to Rs 8,000?

Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu division of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to raise the Pongal cash gift from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000, to be given alongside the customary Pongal gift hamper.
The request was put forth by BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad, who accused the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of systematically denying citizens their rightful Pongal benefits over the past four years.
In his statement, Prasad contended that the DMK government was trying to deceive the underprivileged by offering a “meager” Rs 3,000 cash aid just before elections, while withholding dues from previous years. He noted that the Pongal cash support promised for 2026 does not make up for the ongoing reduction and denial of assistance since the DMK took power.
Prasad pointed out that during the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) administration, Rs 2,500 in cash was provided along with the Pongal gift hamper in 2021. According to him, the DMK has diminished the cash assistance to Rs 1,000 in 2022 and 2023, gave no cash aid in 2024, and maintained a similar trajectory in 2025. “From 2022 to 2025, Tamil Nadu families should have received at least Rs 10,000 in Pongal cash support based on historical standards. Instead, the DMK has deprived them of nearly Rs 8,000 over these four years,” Prasad claimed.
He characterized the current Rs 3,000 announcement as a pre-election maneuver designed to garner votes rather than a genuine welfare initiative. The BJP argued that combining the Rs 3,000 with Rs 5,000 in arrears from previous years would ensure a fair Rs 8,000 Pongal cash gift for 2026. Such a measure, they asserted, would reflect a true commitment to assisting individuals grappling with escalating living expenses.
Charging the DMK with undermining welfare promises and tarnishing the State's governance reputation, the BJP called on Chief Minister Stalin to promptly adjust the Pongal cash aid to Rs 8,000 and guarantee its distribution alongside the traditional gift hamper.
The party reiterated that reinstating the full Pongal benefit is crucial to achieving justice for the people of Tamil Nadu.
