Will TN Government Offer Rs 3,000 Cash with Pongal Gift Package?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Dec 11 (NationPress) In a pivotal pre-election move, the Tamil Nadu government is reportedly contemplating the distribution of a cash component of Rs 3,000 alongside the upcoming Pongal gift package intended for all ration card holders.
This decision is likely to be unveiled following the initiation of the Women’s Rights Monthly Payment Scheme, which is set to commence disbursing overdue payments starting Friday.
Typically, Pongal gifts are handed out through Tamil Nadu’s ration shops in advance of the harvest festival. Under the previous AIADMK administration, the Pongal package in 2021 featured a historic cash payment of Rs 2,500, the highest ever provided in conjunction with festival supplies. Following its ascent to power, the DMK government curtailed this amount to Rs 1,000 but maintained the distribution of essentials like rice, sugar, and sugarcane.
This year, however, the government opted to deliver only non-cash items -- matta rice, sugar, sugarcane, and other necessities -- a choice that drew considerable public backlash.
With Assembly elections approaching next year, senior ministers have reportedly urged officials to consider avenues for providing cash aid to all ration card holders. Initial talks suggested a sum of Rs 5,000 per family, but the state’s financial limitations -- primarily due to the monthly disbursements under the Women’s Rights Scheme -- seem to have rendered this option unfeasible for now. As a compromise, the government is allegedly readying a Rs 3,000 cash offer along with a comprehensive Pongal kit for the forthcoming festival, which is expected to encompass all 2.25 crore ration card holders throughout Tamil Nadu.
While an official announcement has yet to be made, various sources suggest that the declaration will likely occur after the pending payments under the Women’s Rights Scheme on December 12.
Interestingly, Pongal packages are customarily distributed only prior to the festival. However, due to the logistical challenges involved in disbursing cash to such a vast population, the government is anticipated to permit the collection of Pongal kits throughout January, ensuring beneficiaries have sufficient time to acquire both the festival goods and the cash support. If confirmed, this would represent one of the largest cash distributions associated with Pongal in recent times and could significantly sway public opinion ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
