Chennai, Jan 4 (NationPress) The government of Tamil Nadu has declared a cash support of Rs 3,000 for all families holding rice ration cards as part of the Pongal festival festivities.

This initiative, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is designed to enhance the inclusiveness and joy of the harvest festival for households throughout the State, as stated in an official announcement from the government.

The government emphasized that Pongal is an ancient and esteemed Tamil festival that has been celebrated for thousands of years, fostering strong familial connections. It is an occasion to show appreciation for the Sun, the cattle that assist agricultural labor, and the farmers who sustain the world and alleviate hunger.

According to the statement, "Pongal epitomizes humanity’s profound relationship with nature, agriculture, and shared welfare."

Previously, the State government had revealed an extensive Pongal gift package for all rice cardholders and families living in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps.

This package comprises one kilogram of raw rice, one kilogram of sugar, and a whole sugarcane, which will be distributed through fair price shops across Tamil Nadu.

The aim is to guarantee that every eligible household can celebrate Pongal with dignity and joy.

The scheme is expected to benefit approximately 2.22 crore rice ration card holders, including families in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps.

Alongside the food items and cash assistance, the government has organized the distribution of dhotis and sarees as part of its festive welfare initiatives.

Officials confirmed that shipments of dhotis and sarees have already been sent to all districts.

To further amplify the festive atmosphere, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has mandated the distribution of Rs 3,000 as a cash gift to all qualified families.

With the addition of the Pongal gift hampers, clothing, and cash assistance, the overall expenditure for this initiative is projected to be around Rs 6,936.17 crore.

The Chief Minister has directed officials to ensure that all preparations are finalized well ahead of the festival.

The cash assistance, Pongal gift hampers, and clothing will be distributed via fair price shops prior to the start of the Pongal celebrations, ensuring beneficiaries receive their assistance promptly.

The government reiterated that this initiative reflects its dedication to social welfare and its commitment to supporting families during significant cultural events, thereby reaffirming Pongal as a festival of gratitude, abundance, and shared joy among the people of Tamil Nadu.
