Has Tamil Nadu Launched a Pilot AI and Robotics Program in Government Schools?

Chennai, Sep 14 (NationPress) The realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital tools is now expanding beyond private educational institutions. In a remarkable initiative aimed at closing the technological gap, the government of Tamil Nadu has launched a pilot program this academic year focused on training students in government schools on AI applications, coding, and interactive online resources.

This program, named Tamil Nadu Schools Programme for AI, Robotics and Knowledge of Online Tools (TN SPARK), is being introduced for students in Classes 6 to 9. Its objective is to cultivate a generation well-versed in technology, enabling them to stay abreast of emerging trends, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances.

In the Coimbatore district, 85 government schools are participating in the initial phase, which includes 78 middle schools, four high schools, and three higher secondary schools. Customized bilingual textbooks in English and Tamil have been developed for the new curriculum, and sessions are being led by trained mathematics and science educators.

Each school has designated one or two periods weekly for TN SPARK classes, utilizing around 880 advanced lab computers to facilitate the program.

While the modules began with introductory classes, the full syllabus is set to commence in October following quarterly assessments.

The curriculum covers essential aspects of computer science, such as algorithms, flowcharts, word processing, and data visualization. It also incorporates online educational tools that provide interactive lessons across various subjects including science, geography, anatomy, and languages.

Students will explore Artificial Intelligence through engaging applications like text-to-image generation, text-to-speech, doodling, digital art, translation, and animation.

Coding will be introduced using beginner-friendly platforms like Blockly, Turtle Art, and Scratch, along with foundational lessons in HTML and cyber safety. Educators have noted a growing enthusiasm among students for these classes, often finding them more appealing than traditional subjects.

Advanced labs are being effectively used to foster curiosity and enhance learning skills.

Officials state that this program is aimed not merely at providing access to cutting-edge technology but also at equipping children with problem-solving skills and digital literacy that will prepare them for future academic and career challenges.

With TN SPARK, Tamil Nadu is establishing a precedent for incorporating advanced technology education into government schools, ensuring that students from all backgrounds receive equal exposure to the tools that will define the future.
