Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Tata Steel has been issued a demand notice totaling Rs 1,755.10 crore from the District Mining Office located in Jharkhand's Ramgarh. This notice pertains to allegations of excessive coal extraction from its West Bokaro Colliery during the period from FY2000-01 to FY2006-07, as disclosed in a regulatory filing made by the company on Saturday.
The notice, dated March 30, was officially received by Tata Steel on April 3.
The allegations suggest that the steel producer extracted around 1.62 crore metric tonnes of coal beyond the allowable limits during the mentioned timeframe.
The demand aligns with the grounds cited by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause versus Union of India case, which addressed issues related to illegal mining and overproduction.
Tata Steel has expressed its disagreement with the demand and intends to contest it through appropriate judicial or quasi-judicial channels.
According to the company's statement, “The management believes that the demand is without merit and lacks a substantial foundation.”
In its financial performance, Tata Steel reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,689 crore for the December quarter, marking an impressive increase of 723 percent from Rs 327 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. This profit after tax (PAT) is attributed to the company's shareholders.
In terms of revenue, Tata Steel achieved Rs 57,002 crore in Q3 FY26, reflecting a 6 percent rise from Rs 53,648 crore in the corresponding quarter of the prior financial year.
However, there was a 13 percent sequential decline in net profit from Rs 3,102 crore in Q2 FY26, alongside a 3 percent drop in revenue from Rs 58,689 crore reported in the July-September quarter.
EBITDA for the company stood at Rs 8,309 crore, a 39 percent year-on-year increase, with a margin of about 15 percent.
