Synopsis

In a significant move, Telangana's Chief Minister has mandated the Irrigation Department to create actionable plans for repairing crucial barrages within the Kaleshwaram project. This initiative aims to address structural damages and enhance water supply, reflecting the government's commitment to effective irrigation management.

Key Takeaways

  • Telangana CM has instructed plans for barrage repairs.
  • Contract agencies must be held accountable.
  • 80 tmcft of water will be sourced from Tummidihatti.
  • Plans are underway for irrigation and drinking water supply in Adilabad.
  • CDSE must be completed by December 2026 for all specified dams.

Hyderabad, Oct 28 (NationPress) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday instructed the Irrigation Department officials to devise effective plans for the restoration of the Medigadda, Sundilla, and Annaram barrages, integral components of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project established by the former BRS government.

He emphasized the need for holding the contracted agencies accountable for the damages sustained by the three barrages.

Reddy urged the irrigation officials to formulate strategies to transfer 80 tmcft of water from Tummidihatti to Sundilla and to finalize cost estimations for the repairs of the Sundilla barrage.

This barrage is undergoing restoration to facilitate water supply to the Sripada Yellampalli project.

During a high-level evaluation of irrigation initiatives, the Chief Minister inquired about the current status of the damage to the Sundilla barrage.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), senior officials were tasked with creating plans to provide irrigation and drinking water to the former Adilabad district. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of incorporating past projects in the estimations.

In reviewing the correspondence from Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil to the state government, CM Revanth Reddy proposed several recommendations, including the development of project-specific analysis reports.

The Chief Minister announced plans for another review meeting in the second week of November to discuss the forthcoming steps based on comprehensive project reports.

The Union Minister, in his letter, noted that advancements on the Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation (CDSE) in Telangana have been minimal.

As mandated by the Dam Safety Act, 2021, all designated dams must undergo a CDSE by December 2026, yet Telangana has made scant progress, despite managing 173 designated dams.

The Medigadda, Sundilla, and Annaram barrages are components of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project established by the previous BRS government.

Following the Congress party's rise to power, a probe was initiated into alleged irregularities concerning the project. After the report from the P. C. Ghose Commission was submitted, the state government decided to refer the case to the CBI.

The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) also investigated the damage to the three barrages and confirmed that structural failures arose from flaws in their design, construction, and management.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize the implications of the Chief Minister's directives regarding irrigation infrastructure. The call for accountability and effective planning demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing water management in Telangana, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development and public welfare.
