Bangkok, Aug 9 (NationPress) Three Thai soldiers sustained injuries due to a landmine detonation on Saturday morning while on patrol near the Thai-Cambodian border, as reported by the Thai Army.
According to a communiqué from Thailand's Second Army Region, the incident transpired at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time, during which Thai forces were patrolling and installing barbed wire to enhance border security, as stated by the Xinhua news agency.
All injured personnel were swiftly evacuated and taken to a nearby hospital for necessary medical care, the Thai Army confirmed.
On August 7, both Cambodia and Thailand reached a mutual agreement regarding a ceasefire and formalized a pact during a special meeting of the General Border Committee held in Malaysia. The two nations decided to retain existing troop placements and refrain from escalating military presence along the border.
Officials from both countries attended the meeting, with representatives from the United States, China, and Malaysia acting as third-party observers.
A joint statement released post-discussions at the Malaysian Ministry of Defence indicated both parties agreed to a ceasefire encompassing all weaponry, vowing to prevent unprovoked fire towards each other's forces, and to maintain current troop levels along the border.
Both nations committed to upholding existing troop deployments without further movements as of the ceasefire which commenced at midnight on July 28, and agreed to ensure humane treatment of captured soldiers in line with international humanitarian standards.
The statement further highlighted the support for an ASEAN observer team led by Malaysia to oversee adherence to the ceasefire. Meanwhile, a temporary monitoring mission consisting of defence attaches from ASEAN nations will be stationed in both Cambodia and Thailand.
Moreover, both parties agreed to ensure ongoing communication among all military regions and units, plan a Regional Border Committee meeting within two weeks, and schedule the next General Border Committee (GBC) meeting within one month. If necessary, an extraordinary GBC meeting should be convened without delay.
