India's long-term growth story intact despite global volatility: PL Asset Management
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's equity markets have demonstrated sustained resilience through a period of heightened global macroeconomic uncertainty, geopolitical turbulence, and commodity price volatility, with the country's structural long-term growth narrative remaining firmly on track, according to a report released on Monday, 3 August by PL Asset Management.
Key Findings from the Report
The report highlighted that inflation remains contained, monetary policy continues to be accommodative, corporate earnings visibility is improving, and government capital expenditure is sustaining economic momentum. Together, these factors are collectively shaping a favourable investment climate for Indian equities, according to the firm.
Notably, the report assessed that a significant portion of prevailing economic uncertainty has already been absorbed and priced into market valuations — a signal that downside risk may be more limited than headline volatility suggests.
Structural Drivers of Long-Term Growth
'Favourable demographics, rising domestic consumption, increasing manufacturing activity, infrastructure spending, digitalisation, and the formalisation of the economy will continue to drive corporate earnings in the future,' the report projected.
This comes amid a broader global backdrop where emerging markets are under pressure from a stronger dollar, elevated energy costs, and slowing demand from developed economies. India's relative insulation — driven by domestic consumption rather than export dependence — has historically provided a buffer in such environments.
Risks on the Radar
The firm flagged rising crude oil prices, currency fluctuations, and evolving geopolitical developments as factors that warrant close monitoring. However, it maintained that these risks are unlikely to structurally derail India's long-term economic growth trajectory.
The IT sector was singled out as an area of caution. The firm said it remained 'quite conservative on the IT sector overall owing to falling global demand and changing disruptions on the back of artificial intelligence' — a concern that aligns with recent earnings guidance cuts from major Indian IT exporters.
Where PL Asset Management Sees Opportunity
Sandeep Neema, Director and Fund Manager at PL Asset Management, advised investors against attempting to time the market. 'It would be a mistake to try to time the market; instead, investors should use volatile situations to increase their exposure to well-managed businesses,' he said.
Neema identified strong investment ideas in financials, industrials, energy and power, and metals — sectors where earnings growth is expected to be driven by policy measures, infrastructure expenditure, and the capital expenditure cycle. The firm also spotted selective opportunities in small-cap and mid-cap companies with 'solid business models and clear visibility on the earnings front.'
Investment Strategy for a Volatile Market
The firm recommended that investors maintain a long-term perspective and treat periods of market consolidation as entry opportunities in quality companies with strong fundamentals. Diversification across industries and market capitalisations was also emphasised as a key risk-management principle.
With India's policy environment remaining broadly supportive and domestic demand holding firm, the near-term trajectory of global risk factors — particularly US monetary policy and crude oil dynamics — will be closely watched by market participants in the weeks ahead.
