Is TMC Considering Impeachment Motion Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress is actively exploring the option of initiating an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar within the Parliament.
The preliminary discussions were held during a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alongside Trinamool Congress representatives from both Houses of Parliament.
However, an unnamed party MP indicated that these discussions are still in the early stages, especially given the limited presence of Trinamool Congress members in both Houses.
Given that Kumar holds certain constitutional protections as the CEC, any impeachment motion would require the signatures of at least 100 MPs to be introduced in Parliament.
Currently, the total count of Trinamool Congress MPs across both Houses stands at only 41, necessitating the party's reliance on support from other opposition factions to gather the required signatories for the impeachment motion.
“In the Tuesday meeting, we discussed which non-BJP parties, particularly those within the opposition INDIA block, could be approached for support,” noted the Trinamool Congress MP.
He further stated, regardless of the outcome, the endeavor would benefit the party. “If successful, Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee could emerge as the leading figures in the national anti-BJP movement. Conversely, if it fails, we can question the commitment of other opposition parties in challenging the BJP nationally,” the MP explained.
Earlier that day, Mamata Banerjee faced inquiries regarding the impeachment issue during a press conference in New Delhi alongside Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Nevertheless, the Chief Minister refrained from providing a straightforward answer. Political analysts suggest that even if Trinamool Congress manages to propose the motion with sufficient signatures, the likelihood of it passing is slim, given the current numerical supremacy of the NDA over the INDIA bloc.
“Nonetheless, this move will undoubtedly provide Mamata Banerjee the opportunity to position herself as the leading figure in the national anti-BJP movement,” remarked a political analyst based in the city.
