Agartala, June 2 (NationPress) Approximately 2,000 members of the youth faction of the ruling BJP's ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), staged a significant protest in front of the District Magistrate's (DM) office in Gomati district on Monday. They locked the main gate for around three hours, demanding accountability from DM Tarit Kanti Chakma.

TMP officials asserted that DM Chakma showed disrespect towards their leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, on May 25.

Debbarma, a former royal family member, along with Purna Chandra Jamatia, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), attempted to meet with the DM at his official residence on that night to discuss important matters. However, the DM declined to meet either of them.

An official from the DM's office stated that Chakma had instructed them, via security personnel, to visit during official hours for discussions.

This incident has stirred political tensions in Tripura, prompting the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the TMP's youth division, to announce a shutdown of all government offices in Gomati district on Monday.

YTF President Suraj Debbarma warned that if the government fails to act against the DM, they would initiate a statewide protest.

After a three-hour demonstration, police intervened, unlocking the DM office's main gate.

In response to the protests, Chief Minister Manik Saha directed Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha to probe the situation and report back.

To maintain order, around 2,000 security personnel from the Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles, and CRPF were deployed, ensuring no incidents occurred during the protest. A police representative confirmed that everything remained peaceful. Earlier, a TMP delegation, led by party leader and Minister for State for Industries & Commerce, Brishaketu Debbarma, met with the Chief Minister to urge action against the DM.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the significance of the recent protests led by the Tipra Motha Party. The escalation of tensions between local political entities and government officials highlights underlying issues of representation and respect within Tripura's political landscape. The call for action against DM Tarit Kanti Chakma exemplifies the need for greater accountability in governance.
