Is the TN BJP Right to Call the Interim Budget a ‘Mirage’?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vehemently criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, labeling the State's Interim Budget for 2026–27 as a “mirage”. This budget is said to have further burdened Tamil Nadu with debt while neglecting the welfare of its citizens.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad claimed that the budget, presented by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's leadership, lacked solid, strategic development plans for essential sectors such as finance, industry, and public welfare.
He pointed out that the government's continuous claims of double-digit economic growth have not benefited the common man.
Prasad asserted that the growth narrative has mainly benefited those within the ruling party, including officials and elected members, while vast segments of the population continue to face hardships.
He accused the government of ignoring ongoing protests and demands from various groups—teachers, doctors, engineers, farmers, individuals with disabilities, nurses, road workers, and anganwadi staff—over the past five years.
The BJP leader further criticized the Budget speech for being filled with self-praise and lacking transparency regarding significant projects.
He questioned the lack of detailed information on the North Chennai Development Project and requested clarification regarding the allocations for cleaning the Cooum river in Chennai.
Moreover, he condemned the government for failing to announce specific plans for removing encroachments from water bodies, despite numerous court rulings on the matter.
Expressing concerns over the State’s increasing debt, Prasad inquired about the status of the expert committee reportedly established to boost revenue and stabilize finances. He claimed that the State is heading towards an unsustainable debt path and called for a clear explanation from the Chief Minister.
Labeling the Budget as “anti-people,” the BJP maintained that the DMK government has not fulfilled the commitments made during the last Assembly elections and has let down multiple sections of society.
