Kolkata, Sep 21 (NationPress) Ahead of the significant 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections next year, the Trinamool Congress is set to partially implement “one person, one post” policy within its grassroots leadership, according to a party source familiar with the matter.
However, a member of the state cabinet, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that this partial application of the ‘one person, one post' principle will only be at grassroots levels, focusing on the party councillors in various urban civic bodies such as municipal corporations and municipalities.
“According to the strategy developed by the party leadership, individuals already serving as councillors in any municipality will not be eligible to hold any organizational position within the same ward or even within the same district,” stated another senior party figure.
This approach aims to eliminate potential conflicts of interest between an individual's responsibilities within the organization and their role as an elected member of an urban civic body. “It has often been observed that a person simultaneously holding the position of a councillor and an organizational role struggles to fulfill either duty effectively. The revised system will resolve these challenges,” remarked the state committee member.
Notably, the concept of “one person, one post” was advocated by the party's general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee a few years back. However, at that time, party elders raised objections, arguing that such a principle could not be applied uniformly across all leadership levels.
Insiders revealed that the leadership has compiled its survey report, and based on that, they are eager to enforce this policy strictly in areas governed by urban civic bodies like municipal corporations and municipalities.
Recently, Abhishek Banerjee conducted individual meetings with the leadership of each district organization. New presidents have been appointed at the town and block levels in six district organizations, with fresh faces assigned to oversee youth, women, and workers' organizations.
