Starting his career in the second tier of English football, Robertson blossomed into a star player and led Nottingham Forest to remarkable success, including winning consecutive European Cups.
“We are devastated to share the news of the passing of our dear friend, Nottingham Forest legend John Robertson. A true giant of our Club and a double European Cup champion, John's exceptional talent, sincerity, and unwavering loyalty to Nottingham Forest will forever remain in our hearts,” the club expressed in a statement.
Robertson’s tenure at Nottingham Forest spanned from 1970 to 1983, followed by a stint at Derby County from 1983 to 1985, before returning to Forest for the 1985-86 season.
Known affectionately as 'Robbo', he also represented Scotland, scoring the decisive goal against England in 1981 and netting another during the 1982 FIFA World Cup against New Zealand. Over his international career, he earned 28 caps and scored eight goals.
In their statement, Robertson's family shared: “John passed away peacefully on Christmas morning with his wife and family by his side, after a long illness. Our only comfort in our grief is that his struggles are now over, and he is reunited with his daughter Jessica. “Robbo” was cherished by many as a footballing hero, but to us, he was simply John and dad, the family man – kind, caring, humorous, lively, and loyal. While our hearts are heavy, we will forever be thankful for the years we shared and the wonderful memories.”
After concluding his playing career, Robertson transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant to his former Nottingham Forest teammate Martin O'Neill at clubs such as Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Celtic, and Aston Villa.
