Kolkata, Aug 18 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has initiated legal proceedings by submitting a petition to a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, contesting the Election Commission of India (ECI) over its recent directive to obtain particulars of booth-level agents (BLAs) from political parties a year ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
The ruling party argues that it is beyond the Election Commission's authority to demand such sensitive information so prematurely.
This case was brought before Justice Amrita Sinha, who scrutinized whether the Trinamool Congress was the only party affected or if others shared similar concerns, asking, “Why have you come alone?”
In response, the legal representative for the Trinamool Congress maintained that while other parties may have acquiesced, they are actively contesting this measure.
Despite seeking expedited hearing, Justice Sinha declined the request for a fast-track approach.
With Assembly elections slated for next year, the anticipation of a Special Intensified Revision (SIR) in Bengal adds urgency to this matter, as political parties are being asked to provide names of booth-level agents—an aspect strongly opposed by the Trinamool Congress.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed that the SIR resembles a precursor to NRC implementation in the state.
“We will not permit the establishment of NRC or detention camps under any circumstances. Any such moves will face significant opposition,” she stated recently.
