Could Trump Rename Penn Station and Dulles Airport?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Feb 11 (NationPress) The White House has acknowledged that President Donald Trump has proposed the idea of renaming significant infrastructure locations in his honor while also defending his views on a US-Canada bridge project.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed inquiries regarding reports that Trump had suggested renaming Penn Station in New York City and Dulles Airport in the Washington area.
“Regarding your initial question about the renaming, why not?” Leavitt remarked. “This was a concept that the president brought up during his discussion with Chuck Schumer.” However, she did not elaborate further on the proposal.
Leavitt was also asked about Trump’s remarks concerning the Gordie Howe Bridge, which links Detroit to Canada and is entirely financed by Canadian funds.
“I believe the president was quite clear and straightforward in his assertions,” she stated.
According to Leavitt, Trump has concerns about the bridge’s ownership and control structure.
“The fact that Canada governs what traverses the Gordie Howe Bridge and owns the land on either side is unacceptable to the president,” she articulated.
She added that Trump believes “more of this bridge” should have been constructed using “more American-made materials.”
“He also contends that the US should possess at least half of the bridge, share authority over its use, and benefit economically from its operation,” Leavitt noted.
“This is yet another instance of President Trump prioritizing America’s interests,” she added.
Leavitt mentioned that Trump communicated his views during a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier in the day.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a vital cross-border infrastructure initiative connecting Michigan and Ontario, aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing trade between the United States and Canada.
Renaming federal infrastructure assets generally necessitates congressional approval. Penn Station serves as a principal rail hub in New York City, while Dulles International Airport caters to the Washington metropolitan region.
