Washington, Jan 8 (NationPress) The White House confirmed on Wednesday that the potential acquisition of Greenland is currently under serious evaluation, emphasizing the Arctic territory's importance for U.S. national security and its role in preventing the actions of Russia and China.

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, President Donald Trump considers Greenland essential for countering the influence of Russia and China in the Arctic.

“Acquiring Greenland has been a topic of discussion for many years,” Leavitt stated to the press. “Presidents since the 1800s have recognized it as beneficial for America’s national security.

Leavitt reiterated that the president has prioritized Arctic security.

“He believes it is in the United States' best interest to deter aggression from both Russia and China in the Arctic region,” she explained.

When asked whether financial arrangements for this acquisition were being considered, Leavitt acknowledged ongoing discussions but declined to disclose specifics.

“This is a subject currently being actively discussed by the President and his national security team,” she remarked.

Leavitt did not dismiss any options, including military actions, emphasizing that Trump does not publicly constrain his strategic options.

“For President Trump, all options remain available as he evaluates what is best for the United States,” she added.

However, she noted that diplomacy continues to be the administration's preferred approach.

“The President's first choice has always been diplomacy,” Leavitt stated.

When questioned about Trump’s recognition of Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, Leavitt mentioned that she has not heard him question it.

“I have not personally heard him challenge it,” she noted, suggesting that reporters might want to ask the president directly.

Leavitt dismissed claims that diplomatic efforts with Denmark were lacking.

“Who said that diplomacy isn’t happening behind the scenes?” she questioned. “The President values diplomacy, and so does his national security team.”

Trump’s method involves being straightforward about U.S. interests while keeping negotiations confidential.

“He’s always open to a conversation,” she said, “but being the President of the United States, he will clearly communicate what he believes serves our national interest.”

Leavitt indicated that increased authority in the Arctic would provide benefits beyond military strategies.

“Gaining more control over the Arctic is essential to ensure that China, Russia, and other adversaries cannot continue their aggression in this crucial strategic area,” she stated.

The White House has consistently highlighted that strategic geography is becoming increasingly important in U.S. security planning, especially as climate change opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources in the Arctic.

Greenland, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted attention due to its geographic location, mineral wealth, and proximity to key Arctic corridors.
