Chennai, Oct 18 (NationPress) Almost three weeks after the devastating stampede in Karur that resulted in the loss of 41 lives, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has deposited financial support of ₹20 lakh each into the bank accounts of 39 grieving families.
The tragic event took place on September 27 during a TVK gathering in Karur, where Vijay was addressing a large crowd. The chaotic situation led to the death of 41 individuals, including children, with many others injured.
The incident sent shockwaves throughout the country and sparked considerable criticism regarding the organizers’ management of the crowd. Following this tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured.
The TVK also committed to providing ₹20 lakh to each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh to those injured. On Saturday, party officials confirmed that the relief funds have been successfully transferred to the bank accounts of 39 families of the victims through online transactions.
However, reports indicate that two families—those of Prithika and Chandra—have yet to receive their financial aid. Insiders claimed these delays are due to incomplete documentation and assured that the remaining payments would be resolved soon.
The party’s decision to expedite the aid before Vijay’s personal visit was intended to ensure that the families of the victims received prompt assistance.
According to reports, Vijay plans to meet the affected families in Karur after the Deepavali festivities.
In the meantime, TVK's leadership has instructed its members to refrain from holding Deepavali celebrations under the party’s name as a gesture of respect for the victims. In a message from TVK General Secretary N. Anand, local leaders were instructed to avoid any public festivities or party-branded events during the festive period.
The Karur tragedy continues to overshadow the TVK's outreach initiatives. While the party describes the stampede as an “unfortunate accident,” discussions about event safety, crowd management, and accountability are ongoing in political and administrative circles.
