Two Fraudsters from Mumbai Impersonating Delhi Police Cops Arrested in Kolkata

Kolkata, Dec 11 (NationPress) Authorities have apprehended two infamous fraudsters from Mumbai who were extorting money while pretending to be officers of the cybercrime division of Delhi Police in a hotel at Sealdah, central Kolkata, on Wednesday.

The suspects have been identified as Vinode Kovinda Pawar and Dhanji Jagannath Shinde, both residents of Mumbai.

The arrests were initiated following a recent complaint by a local woman at the Charu Market Police Station in South Kolkata.

According to the complaint, the two men contacted her while impersonating cybercrime division officers from Delhi. They falsely informed her of several serious allegations lodged against her with the Delhi Police and threatened her with arrest.

In a state of panic, the woman was offered a chance to resolve the issue with a significant payment. Following their demands, she began transferring money to their bank accounts.

After transferring a substantial sum of Rs 66 lakh and continuing to receive demands for more, she reached out to the Charu Market police station.

Local police quickly contacted their counterparts in Delhi and confirmed that no cases had been filed against the woman.

Subsequently, law enforcement began monitoring the SIM cards used to contact her. The two suspects were later apprehended at a hotel in Sealdah.

The police were also able to trace the funds transferred to an account held by Shinde at a private bank. Additionally, mobile phones, SIM cards, and banking documents were confiscated from the arrested individuals.

Kolkata Police have issued a warning to the public regarding this emerging crime trend where unsuspecting individuals are targeted by fraudsters impersonating police officers or officials from the CBI or NCB. The police urge citizens to remain calm during such calls and to promptly report to their local police station.
