UDF Candidate Accuses CPI(M) of Mafia Tactics in Payyannur Attack
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Payyannur, April 10 (NationPress) New claims of intimidation and political aggression have emerged in Payyannur, located in Kerala's Kannur district. UDF-backed Independent candidate V. Kunjikrishnan asserts that a mafia-like syndicate is functioning to quell dissent. His statements followed a late-night attack on the residence of a supporter, during which unknown perpetrators shattered window panes and ignited a vehicle belonging to T. Purushothaman.
This incident, occurring around 1 a.m., has escalated political tensions within the Kannur area.
“In my book and speeches, I have pointed out that Payyannur is under the influence of a mafia. When it became evident that the CPI(M) candidate and incumbent MLA T.I. Madhusoodhanan was in a challenging contest, such forces resorted to these tactics against opponents,” Kunjikrishnan remarked.
He claimed that the traditional sense of safety associated with one’s home is being intentionally undermined.
“The notion of home as a sanctuary is under siege. This was clear during the entire campaign period,” he stated, highlighting what he termed a persistent effort to instill fear among supporters of the opposition.
Reflecting on his own political history, Kunjikrishnan recalled a similar incident from a few weeks prior when he was expelled from the CPI(M): “One of my supporters had their bike set on fire. To this day, no action has been taken,” he noted, implying a recurring theme of intimidation.
While he refrained from directly blaming the CPI(M) for the recent incident, he made a pointed comment, “I won’t assert that this was orchestrated by the CPI(M), but I believe such events wouldn’t occur without Madhusoodhan’s awareness.”
The UDF has already raised concerns about widespread electoral irregularities, including fraudulent voting and threats directed at booth agents during the elections in Payyannur.
This latest event has intensified worries about potential post-election violence in the district.
Following the incident, law enforcement has increased security measures in and around Payyannur, as the political climate remains tense ahead of the counting day scheduled for May 4.
Kunjikrishnan, who was expelled from the CPI(M), contested the election as an Independent candidate, receiving support from the Congress-led UDF.
