Threats Lead to Shutdown of Independent Candidate's Campaign Office in Kerala
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kannur, March 21 (NationPress) The election campaign office of V. Kunjikrishnan, a former CPI-M leader now running as an Independent with backing from the Congress-led UDF in Payyannur, was forcibly closed on Saturday due to alleged threats directed at the landowner by local CPI-M activists.
Located at Kothayi Mukk, the office was dismantled after the owner reportedly expressed that he could no longer endure the increasing pressure.
Kunjikrishnan and his supporters claimed that the landowner was threatened with dire consequences should the premises remain active for campaign purposes.
According to them, the owner indicated he was explicitly warned against leasing space to the rebel candidate.
“The owner asked us to leave after experiencing threats. We chose to take down the office to prevent any difficulties for him. This is a blatant attack on democratic processes,” Kunjikrishnan stated, accusing factions of systematically seeking to suppress dissent.
This unfortunate incident unfolds amid rising tensions following Kunjikrishnan’s recent split with the CPI-M last month.
A well-known leader in Payyannur, he stirred controversy by publicly accusing the party of manipulating funds collected for a party martyr.
His allegations, along with follow-up media engagements, culminated in his expulsion from the party. Kunjikrishnan further asserted that intimidation tactics began soon after, with groups of alleged CPI-M members appearing outside his home, setting off firecrackers and shouting slogans when only his wife and grandchildren were present.
The situation escalated when the CPI-M reinstated the sitting legislator against whom Kunjikrishnan had made allegations.
In retaliation, he decided to contest in the elections.
The Congress leadership quickly initiated outreach, sending RSP leader Shibhu Baby John for discussions, which eventually led to Kunjikrishnan running from the RSP quota as a UDF-supported Independent.
Emphasizing that the smear campaign against him had not swayed voters, Kunjikrishnan remarked that the latest episode illustrated a “culture of fear” being fostered to politically marginalize him.
Kunjikrishnan is competing against the incumbent CPI-M legislator T.I. Madhusudhan, who secured victory in the 2021 elections by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes.
