Election Commission Acts Against LDF Candidate T.P. Ramakrishnan Over Controversial Campaign in Perambra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Perambra, April 3 (NationPress) The election commission has issued a formal notice to LDF convener and candidate T.P. Ramakrishnan regarding the contentious campaign announcement in Perambra, located in Kozhikode district of Kerala. This move heightens the political tension in the region.
The issue surfaced when a local resident, Mundakkandi Saleel, trailed the campaign vehicle and recorded the audio.
Ramakrishnan, a senior leader of the CPI(M) and the convenor of the ruling Left Front, is striving for a fourth electoral victory in this constituency.
The announcement allegedly indicates that members of the Muslim League are soliciting votes based on religious affiliations, calling for support for “a candidate from our community”.
The UDF argues that this message was intended to stir communal emotions and divide the electorate.
In response to a complaint from the UDF, the Deputy Collector responsible for upholding the Model Code of Conduct has requested clarification regarding the alleged infractions connected to the audio message that has sparked significant controversy.
This notice comes at a time when the LDF is already facing escalating criticism from the opposition, which accuses the CPI(M) of utilizing divisive strategies.
The announcement, reportedly broadcast from a campaign vehicle, has faced widespread condemnation for suggesting that opposing factions are engaging in religiously motivated mobilization.
Senior leader of the Indian Union Muslim League, T.T. Ismail, remarked that the situation is “unfortunate”, asserting that while the CPI(M) often discusses “social engineering”, what has transpired in Perambra is merely “communal engineering”.
He also mentioned that the UDF has comprehensive evidence regarding the source and execution of the campaign material but has opted to withhold it for now, as the matter is under official review.
UDF candidate Fathima Thahliya supported the allegations, stating that it is now clear that the vehicle used for the announcement is part of the Left’s registered campaign fleet.
She argued that the content of the message indicates a calculated effort.
“This was a recorded message. It needed to be scripted and then recorded. That clearly indicates it was premeditated,” she stated.
Thahliya also accused the CPI(M) of changing its narrative. “Initially, they denied any connection, asserting that the vehicle wasn’t theirs. But now the truth has surfaced—it belongs to them,” she added.
With the Election Commission intervening and demanding clarification, this controversy has intensified the political struggle in Perambra, transforming the constituency into a crucial battleground as campaigning intensifies.
