Moscow, Sep 15 (NationPress) The Second Western District Military Court in Russia has sentenced Andrey Prikhodko, a former Ukrainian boxing champion and member of the Kraken assault unit, to 20 years in prison after convicting him for detonating a Gazelle vehicle containing Russian military personnel in the Belgorod region in 2023.
In the ruling, the judge remarked, "For the crimes committed, Prikhodko is sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment, with the initial five years to be spent in prison, followed by the remainder in a maximum security penal facility, along with a fine of 800 thousand rubles."
Moreover, the time spent in custody since Prikhodko's arrest will count towards his sentence, which he is expected to appeal, reported Russia's leading news agency, Tass.
Additionally, Prikhodko is mandated to pay approximately 13,000 rubles for investigative costs and just over 12,000 rubles for the services of a state-appointed lawyer, who sought a reclassification of the charges from a terrorist act to an attempted one.
During the trial, Prikhodko admitted to crimes under multiple articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including Article 205 (terrorist attack), Article 222.2 (illegal circulation of firearms), Article 226.1 (smuggling of weapons), and Article 322 (illegal border crossing).
The proceedings lasted nearly a month, interrupted due to a lack of expert examination results. Prikhodko accepted his guilt and provided a confession. The prosecution had initially sought a 25-year sentence and a 700 thousand rubles fine.
According to the indictment, Prikhodko's unit penetrated Belgorod at the end of May 2023 to execute terrorist operations. On June 6, Ukrainian forces targeted a Gazelle vehicle with Russian servicemen, destroying it completely, although the soldiers managed to escape.
Born in Mariupol in 1994, Prikhodko achieved recognition during his 15-year sports career, becoming a champion and winner of the Ukrainian Boxing Cup, and a world champion in kickboxing. He was injured and captured near Artemovsk in July 2023 during an offensive from the village of Chasiv Yar. Prikhodko stated that he joined the military following disagreements with his coach.
