Is There Uncertainty Surrounding the SIR Training Session for Bengal Government Officials?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 11 (NationPress) Concerns have surfaced regarding the initiation of the two-day training program for the 8,505 Group-B officers designated by the West Bengal government, intended for their involvement in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) within the state. This uncertainty stems from the fact that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not yet confirmed how many individuals on the state-provided list are actually eligible for participation in the revision process.
The ECI is currently reviewing the pay bands of the names listed by the state government to verify their eligibility as Group-B officers.
Only after this verification process is completed will the two-day training program be conducted for the selected officers.
However, insiders from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal have indicated that the review of the pay bands for these 8,505 Group-B officers could take considerable time. Consequently, there is a chance that by the time the final shortlist is completed, the SIR process may already be nearing its conclusion.
Since pay bands are regarded as the most reliable means of determining the grade of government officers, sources from the CEO’s office have noted that the ECI is placing significant emphasis on this examination.
In instances of ambiguity, the ECI may also need to consult the state government for further clarification, which could further extend the timeline.
Meanwhile, the state government has issued a statement suggesting that certain vested interests are attempting to generate confusion regarding the eligibility of the Group-B officers. However, the government did not specify who it referred to as “vested interests.”
On Tuesday evening, the ECI extended the deadline for completing the hearing sessions on claims and objections to the draft voters’ list in West Bengal until February 21. Consequently, the publication date for the final voters’ list has also been postponed to February 28, instead of the previously scheduled February 14.
The day following the release of the final voters’ list, a full bench of the ECI will arrive in Kolkata for a two-day visit to assess the post-SIR situation. Shortly thereafter, the polling dates for the upcoming Assembly election in the state will be announced by the ECI.
