What is the ECI Awaiting from Bengal Government Officials?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, February 12 (NationPress) Significant doubts are cast on the involvement of the 8,505 Group-B officers recommended by the West Bengal government in the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR), as the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not yet received comprehensive background information on these officials by February 11.
Sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal revealed that the ECI has requested not only the pay bands for all 8,505 officers listed by the state government but also additional information regarding some individuals whose classification as Group-B officers is questionable.
“With only two days remaining before the deadline for hearings on claims and objections concerning the draft voters’ list on February 14, it seems unlikely that any of these 8,505 officers will participate in the hearing sessions. Some may be involved during the document review and resolution phase scheduled from February 14 to February 21, but this will depend on how thoroughly the state government clarifies the credentials of the officers concerned,” an insider from the CEO’s office stated.
The ECI has received specific indicators suggesting that names of some upper-division clerks and even typists have been included in the list of Group-B officers submitted by the state government. Additionally, it has come to light that a retired state government employee's name has also made it to this list.
The ECI has already requested background information on the dubious names from the state government and the relevant departments.
The final voters’ list is set to be published on February 28. Following this, the full bench of the ECI will visit Kolkata for two days to assess the situation post-SIR. Subsequently, the ECI will announce the election dates for the Assembly polls in the state.
