Are 500 Officers in Bengal Already Serving as AEROs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) observed on Friday that out of the 8,505 Group-B officials submitted by the West Bengal government for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative, 500 individuals are already functioning as assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) involved in the voter revision process.
An insider from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Office revealed that the primary intention behind acquiring the names of these 8,505 Group-B officials was to incorporate them as micro-observers in the voter revision exercise.
“However, since 500 of the 8,505 officers provided by the state are already serving as AEROs, appointing them as micro-observers lacks rationale, given that the responsibilities of micro-observers significantly differ from those of electoral registration officers (EROs) and AEROs,” the CEO's office source stated.
Moreover, the insider indicated that with the deadline for concluding the hearing sessions related to the SIR approaching on Saturday, the Commission is still awaiting comprehensive background information regarding these 8,505 Group-B officials, including their current pay scales, from the state government or associated departments.
The Commission had requested background details after being informed by the CEO's office that all officials listed were categorized as Group-B.
Additionally, reports suggest that a retired state government officer's name was also included in this list.
Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has voiced concerns over this matter, asserting that the electoral voter list comprises only those officers and employees who are close allies of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
“This is merely a devious scheme by the ruling party to manipulate the elections through covert influence. How can the process be trusted when loyalists are deployed like chess pieces without any transparency? I urge the ECI to investigate this issue and take appropriate action,” Adhikari remarked.
