West Bengal Officers Challenge CEO's Claims on Voter Roll Issues

Synopsis

The West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) Officers’ Association has strongly rebutted claims from the Chief Electoral Officer regarding the unresolved voter roll statuses, emphasizing that the EROs and AEROs are not at fault. This controversy raises questions about accountability in the electoral process.

Key Takeaways

West Bengal officers refute CEO's claims Allegations deemed completely false Role of micro observers highlighted Implications for electoral integrity Call for transparency in electoral processes

Kolkata, March 2 (NationPress) The West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) Officers’ Association on Monday dismissed claims made by West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal, which suggested that the classification of certain names as “under adjudication” in the finalized electoral rolls—published following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process—was due to the actions of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).

In a statement shared on social media, the WBCS (Executive) Officers’ Association labeled these allegations as “entirely false” and contended that the unresolved status of these names was not a result of any shortcomings on the part of EROs or AEROs.

“In response to the communication posted on social media by @CEOWestBengal dated 02.03.2026, we express deep concern over the attribution of the names marked as ‘Under Adjudication’ to the EROs/AEROs. This is absolutely untrue and we strongly deny it. The communication alleges that these names were excluded from the recently published electoral roll due to the actions of the EROs/AEROs,” the association stated.

The association further asserted that the micro observers and roll observers appointed by the Election Commission of India were responsible for this situation.

“The EROs/AEROs have been diligently performing their duties during this period, conducting hearings, uploading documentation, and issuing reasoned orders. The micro observers and roll observers engaged by the Election Commission of India have disagreed with and returned numerous cases already resolved by the EROs/AEROs without providing any observations or comments, resulting in many names being classified as ‘Under Adjudication’,” the statement continued.

It further emphasized that blaming officers who have been dedicatedly working in the electoral process is not only disrespectful but also negatively impacts their morale.

The response from the WBCS (Executive) Officers’ Association came a day after the Chief Electoral Officer provided clarification regarding the “under adjudication” classification in the final voters’ list.

In a statement, the CEO clarified: “We would like to specify that all cases under consideration by Hon’ble Judicial Officers have been marked as ‘Under Adjudication’ in the electoral roll published on 28.02.2026. The esteemed Judicial Officers are operating under the guidance of the Calcutta High Court, following the order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”

The statement further added: “It is important to note that certain names have been marked as ‘Under Adjudication’ because the concerned EROs/AEROs did not make a decision after hearings. Consequently, those names, being pending, were referred for adjudication by Judicial Officers as per the direction of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”

Point of View

It is crucial to present the facts surrounding the allegations made by the CEO against the EROs and AEROs. The response from the WBCS (Executive) Officers’ Association highlights a critical rift in accountability within the electoral process, reflecting the need for transparency and integrity in this vital democratic procedure.
